HPV Detection in the Oral Cavity: A Systematic Review
Keywords:
Oral HPV, prevalence, limitations, opportunity areasAbstract
Introduction. HPV testing in the oral cavity has gained vital importance as an alternative method to traditional techniques since the end of last century; however, it is rarely described in the literature about the prevalence of oral HPV, and the limitations and opportunity areas around its application.
Objectives. Reviewing updated information about oral HPV testing, HPV prevalence, and the limitations and opportunity areas around oral HPV detection tests.
Methodology. A systematic review was carried out in PubMed with articles published between 1998-2020, indexed in JCR, following the PRISMA statement and steps proposed by Holly, Salmon and Saimbert (2016). The articles were selected according to a heading which contained inclusion criteria. Data analysis was narratively synthesized and the outcome was tabulated individually in an Excel table.
Results. A total of 16 articles were included, identifying the prevalence of HPV in the oral cavity in 6.9%, lack of literature and knowledge about the subject as limitations, and opportunity areas such as the creation of new oral HPV detection methods.
Conclusions. HPV testing in the oral cavity is a good alternative compared to conventional tests, however, there is a lack of information regarding its dissemination, awareness must be raised in patients and health workers so they know about the subject and implement it. Creation of new oral HPV detection methods must be worked on.
