Abstract

Introduction. Some of the common problems that nursing and university students in general tend to present are stress, anxiety and depression that can impact their well-being and academic performance. Jobs carried out in private nursing schools are scarce in northern Mexico.

Objective. Determine the association of stress, anxiety and depression levels in first semester students of the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Technical Professional in General Nursing (PTEG) at a private school. Methodology. A descriptive, associative and cross-sectional study was carried out in a private Nursing school in Torreón, Coahuila, with 111 first semester students, applying the Beck and DASS-21 questionnaires to evaluate the levels of depression, anxiety and stress.

Results. Positive associations were found between anxiety (p=.008), stress (p=.001) and depression (p=.006) in the students evaluated. It was observed that 23.8% of PTEG face severe anxiety, compared to 2.2% in Bachelor of Nursing. In PTEG there was a moderate to mild level of 14.3% in stress compared to 4.4% in the Bachelor of Nursing. Regarding depression, in PTEG there was a 23.8% moderate level, in contrast to the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, with 11.1% mild and 4.4% moderate.

Conclusion. This study indicates the significant presence of anxiety, stress and depression in first-semester PTEG and Bachelor of Nursing students, with notable differences between both majors. These findings highlight the need to implement psychological and emotional support strategies for each group, in order to improve the well-being and academic performance of students.
