Introduction. Obesity is an epidemic disease with an impact on morbidity and mortality, quality of life and costs generated to the health system. In Mexico, 24.7% of adolescents were overweight and 18.2% obese. The objective was to estimate the relationship between appetite traits and eating habits and BMI in adolescents with normal weight and overweight.
Methodology. Correlational design. 518 adolescents between 15 and 19 years old selected for convenience participated. A data card, Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire and Health Behavior in School-aged Children in Spanish were used. SPSS v.25 was used for descriptive and inferential statistics with Spearman's Rho coefficient.
Results. Average age 16.83 years, 24.1% were overweight, 55.8% were women, 45.2% belonged to a medium socioeconomic level. A negative relationship was found between emotional overeating appetite traits (rs = -.13, p < .01), satiety response (rs = -.16, p < .01) and picky attitude (rs = -.16, p < .01) with the eating habits of adolescents. The response to food showed a negative relationship with the BMI of the participants with rs = -.09, p < .05.
Conclusions. The appetite traits of emotional overeating, satiety response, and picky attitude were negatively related to eating habits. Likewise, the response to food showed a negative relationship with the BMI of adolescents. It is suggested to strengthen the study of appetite traits in the adolescent population and in the Mexican context.
