Introduction. The use of e-cigarettes has increased among young people, including medical students, who are aware of the associated risks. Studies have identified some reasons for e-cigarette use; however, to the best of our knowledge, no validated instruments have been found in the Mexican context. This study aims to validate an instrument to assess the reasons for e-cigarette use in Mexican medical students.
Methodology. Instrumental research. A cultural adaptation of the original questionnaire was applied to a sample of 197 medical students from a private university in Mexico, using a 21-item Likert-scale questionnaire.
Results. The results showed the main motivations for use are the absence of odor and ease of use. Of the total participants, 36% admitted to using e-cigarettes. The validated instrument showed an adequate reliability index (Cronbach’s alpha = .777) and content validity (CVI = .95), ensuring its applicability in future research.
Conclusion. The study allowed us to analyze and adapt an effective instrument to measure the reasons that lead young people to use e-cigarettes.
