Abstract

Introduction. Pancreatic cancer represents a clinical and human challenge due to its high complexity and the profound emotional impact it generates in patients and families. In this context, humanized surgical nursing plays a central role by providing comprehensive care that transcends technical aspects, supporting coping, dignity, and adaptation in moments of great vulnerability.
Objective. To understand the life experience of a woman with advanced pancreatic cancer who underwent palliative surgery, from the perspective of humanized surgical nursing.
Methodology. qualitative study from a phenomenological single-case perspective, conducted between January and August 2025. The participant was a 53-year-old woman diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. An in-depth interview was conducted, recorded, and transcribed verbatim, supplemented by observation and field notes. Methodological rigor was ensured through credibility, triangulation of sources (interview, observation, clinical records), validation of findings with the participant (feedback), and reflective recording by the researcher. Ethical principles of autonomy, confidentiality, and informed consent were respected.
Results. Surgical nursing influences all phases of human care: before surgery, education and accompaniment strengthened coping; in the operating room, simple gestures reaffirmed dignity; in palliative surgery, the nurse provided emotional support; and in the postoperative period, care transcended the technical by integrating empathetic and spiritual support.
Conclusion. The experience demonstrates that surgical nursing, beyond technical practice, plays a transformative role in the patient’s and family’s adaptation through integral, human, and humanized care.
