Introduction. COVID-19, is a disease that has seriously affected the population and the health professionals themselves, exposed during care and contact with patients, but also with external factors of social interaction. This situation has been explored in all parts of the world; however, in Guatemala it has not been clarified in the nursing staff.
Objective. Describe the risk factors associated with the spread of COVID-19 in the nursing staff of a public hospital in Guatemala.
Methodology. Observational, analytical, case-control, cross-sectional and retrospective study. Data were collected in the period from December 2021 to February 2022. Two groups were included: one with a history of COVID-19 infection, consisting of 77 people (Cases); and another group without the disease, made up of 88 people (Controls), both groups with equivalent sociodemographic characteristics. Both groups were made up of staff from 21 different service areas and 5 jobs that make up the nursing profession.
Results. An increase in incidence of 24.3 was obtained for every 100 people in the nursing staff in February. It was identified that the greatest risk that the disease contracted was being a nursing assistant and being at the age of 18 to 37 years, being female with 86.4% of the population. The association on the sociodemographic and labor characteristics, the related variables, although not significantly to contract COVID-19, was evident. The vaccine in the Neumococo nursing staff behaved as a protective or beneficial factor, when the staff was not vaccinated against this disease.
Conclusions. Due to the variable behavior of SARS-COV-2, promoting studies in this field are necessary for the nursing professional.
