Abstract
This article investigates the place of El río sin orillas (1991) in the work of Juan José Saer as a whole. As a piece of Saer’s work and compared to his novels, El río sin orillas presents some analogous topics and formal characteristics. From this point, in the article we reflect on the literary genre’s role in Saer’s production and, in particular, on the dialogue between the novel and the essay as two forms that allow the author to explore a set of themes and problems from different perspectives.
