Abstract

Planned obsolescence is immersed in the unstoppable increase of electronic waste, generated
by the brief functionality of electronic products that has been witnessed in recent years.
Currently, only about 20% of this garbage is recycled and the remaining 80% reaches the soil
of many ecosystems, causing the presence of toxic materials with a persistent character. The
UN mentions that this electronic waste symbolizes 70% of the inorganic waste that ends up in
landfills. Therefore, an exhaustive electronic search of articles and scientific publications in
reliable platforms that were useful for the development of this bibliographic review was carried
out, with the aim of analyzing and deepening some general concepts of planned obsolescence
and the negative effects it causes in the environment. It was concluded that there is not enough
information on this issue because not everyone is aware of the great problem generated by
planned obsolescence pollution, as this phenomenon encourages consumption and increases
pollution and increasing the amount of waste, this risk can be reduced if a correct supply chain
is executed, Design and management of products by the large companies that generate most
of these electronic products. A possible solution to this phenomenon is mitigation that aims to
reduce the impact of obsolescence by presenting some alternatives that we can implement as
consumers and thus reduce environmental damage and public health.
