Abstract

Polymers and metal nanoparticles can be combined into different materials with specific characteristics. In this paper, the fundamental concepts for the formation of metal/polymer-based composites are roughly reviewed, with emphasis on systems with potential applications in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The basic theories of SERS enhancement mechanisms are briefly presented. The most interesting advances in SERS substrate metal/polymer are summarized in a general way. In addition, the main applications of SERS in multiple research fields are highlighted, including biomolecular detection, medical diagnosis, forensic sciences, detection of organic contaminants, and food safety, among others. Finally, a discussion of promising opportunities for the investigation of SERS substrates based on metal/polymer composites in the future is presented
