Abstract

In this work we advocate for the use of the term “Findings novels” (“narrativa literaria de detección”) instead of that of “detective novels” (“novela policiaca”) since we consider it to be more eloquent: the term “Detective novels” (novela policiaca) makes reference, either to the police or any police institution, which are an important part of the solving of the crime but that are not strictly necessary for the development of the plot; whereas “findings narrative” refer to the process of investigating or to the discovery, which is always present in this kind of literature. Reviewing the genre, we found that, despite being abundant, it tends to have as a constant three different kinds of perspective: 1) the detective-protagonist’s view, 2) the criminal’s view; and 3) the victim’s view. Therefore, making a wide study of this kind of novels, this work traces the evolution of different works, authors, traditions and discourses such as the filmic.
