The oldest medicinal records available, written between 5000 and 3000 BC. by Sumerians on clay tablets, show that humans understood diseases and that plants containing medicines could help maintain and restore good health. Hemp was one of China's first crop plants. For hundreds or perhaps thousands of years, Central and East Asia inhabitants domesticated varieties of cannabis from wild plants to artificially selected crops. Currently, the chemical composition of this plant has been extensively studied and approximately 500 compounds have been identified; examples of these are cannabinoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic amides, terpenes, and lignanamides.
