Political violence is one of the main problems faced by women in exercising their political and electoral rights. This problem is reflected in the obstacles imposed on them to exercise their right to participate in the country’s political life, simply because of the fact that they are women (based on gender). Actually, very few women have held public office at the different levels of government in Mexico. One cause of their low political participation has been the lack of support from public authorities and institutions, but another one is the absence of social awareness. Women’s low political participation has an impact on democracy, since they are limited to expressing themselves freely and participating in the country's political decisions and projects. As a consequence, women’s rights are violated and a difficult environment full of prejudices is generated; thus, authorities must guarantee the principle of gender parity and also protect women's human rights, supporting the principles of equality, justice and security. The purpose of this study is to make political violence faced by women visible so that society becomes aware of this serious problem in Mexico. In addition, the importance of the new reform "Parity in everything," which states that there must be equal participation between men and women in the country's public institutions, is pointed out in this work.
