Abstract
Gadolinium complexes are the most used contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging diagnostics. These compounds are excreted unmetabolized in urine and flow through drainage. There, contrast agents can undergo chemical reactions that lead to gadolinium ion release, which is highly toxic. However, as a complex or as an ion it is an emerging water pollutant. This contribution aims to spotlight the environmental problem caused by the inadequate disposal of gadolinium-based contrast agents.
