Abstract
Bacteria are small unicellular prokaryotic organisms that are found in all environments of the planet, being commensals in different hosts (humans and animals) that, compared to eukaryotic organisms, have a simple structure; however, there are at least two elements that help them to survive, the “capsule” and "flagella," the latter of which allow them to move from one side to the other. In addition, bacteria may become “pathogenic” (able to cause diseases), usually through plasmids. These mobile elements may easily transfer virulence genes involved in the pathogenesis of bacteria, such as the production of some toxins and genes for resistance to antibiotics. This horizontal transfer is mediated through a process known as conjugation (an important mechanism of horizontal gene transfer that occurs from donor bacteria to a recipient). The phenomenon of resistance currently represents a public health problem.
