Abstract

Sargassum, a highly invasive marine algae along the Mexican Caribbean
coast, has given rise to significant challenges, particularly in areas heavily
reliant on tourism. This article presents a comprehensive review of the processes
required to harness sargassum as a usable and viable fuel source, emphasizing
the need for innovative solutions. Current research endeavors are
exploring diverse applications, with transesterification techniques emerging
as a promising avenue for converting sargassum into high-quality biodiesel.
The encouraging results from these studies indicate the feasibility of mass
production, yielding a diesel variant that not only stands up to commercial
standards but also emits fewer greenhouse gases and pollutants than conventional
industrial processes. This innovative approach provides a sustainable
solution to mitigate the proliferation of sargassum along the southeast coast
of Mexico. However, the inherent complexity of the process underscores the
necessity for further technological development and in-depth financial studies
to ascertain the economic viability of this groundbreaking endeavor. The
utilization of sargassum as a raw material represents a crucial stride toward
establishing a sustainable energy matrix for regions affected by this algae,
positioning biofuel production as a key application. By incorporating sargassum
into the energy sector, we aim to reduce the environmental impact while
simultaneously addressing the economic and ecological challenges posed by
its accumulation in these coas tal areas.
