PATHOGENICITY IN LETTUCE. DETERMINATION OF RISK BY THE QUALITY OF THE LACTUCA SATIVA CROP AND HUMAN HEALTH FROM AGRICULTURAL IRRIGATION WITH WASTEWATER IN MEXICO

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show the results of a literature review on the research carried out regarding the effects that may exist in the consumption of Lactuca sativa contaminated with microbiological indicators, in particular, fecal coliforms, Salmonella spp, somatic coliphages and helminth eggs. The methodology taken as a basis was carried out in a Lactuca sativa in Colombia, where samples of water, soil and lettuce were collected to analyze the microbiological quality, also, the results showed that the concentrations of the indicators exceeded in some cases the limits established by the national regulations, which implied a potential risk to the health of farmers and consumers. The risk was higher for helminth eggs, followed by somatic coliphages and fecal coliforms, while the risk for Salmonella spp was negligible due to its low concentration. It was concluded that irrigation with untreated wastewater in the lettuce crop represented an unacceptable sanitary risk for the exposed population, so it is recommended to implement control and prevention measures to ensure the safety of agricultural products.
