Abstract

Nanomaterials is a relatively new field of study dedicated to the development and application of materials with
properties significantly different from those of conventional materials for a variety of life-enhancing applications.
The term “nanomaterials” encompasses a wide range of types of materials at the nanoscale, i.e., small scale (with
composite sizes between 1 and 100 nm). The characteristics of nanoparticles depend largely on their size, shape and
deterioration of their properties, such as electrical conduction, thermal conductivity, magnetic properties among
others. The applications of these materials are also diverse and include coatings, light filtration, chemical detection,
antifouling, medical and dental applications. Nanomaterials are already used in numerous products, such as nanoparticle-
filled polymers to improve the performance of radar and sonar, carbon fiber reinforced plastic composites
for more efficient aircraft, and graphene for better performing tennis rackets, to name just a few examples. Nanotechnology
has also become the next big breakthrough in medicine. This has led to the development of nanoparticle
drug delivery platforms, which offer new opportunities to deliver drugs to specific parts of our body. In this review
we discuss some of the various applications of boron nitride nanomaterials in biomedical and environmental sciences
including their use as drug nanocarriers. As it offers new opportunities to treat cancer, heart disease, prostheses
and infections, to mention a few ailments.
