Abstract

The development of any organism is a hierarchical and sequential event that occurs through cellular communication. Communication processes in eukaryotes are carried out through various molecules, including hormones. Steroid hormones participate in the development of vertebrates to control distinctive gender traits, and thus reproduction can occur. Androgens, estrogens, and progestogens are fundamental for the growth and development of new living beings; the hormones mark the different cells of the pregnant mother and the embryo. These hormones, messengers of metabolic flows, are perceived by the cell receptors of the developing vertebrate.  They can also be detected by some surrounding microorganisms that are part of the microbiome. Thus, microorganisms can recognize three environmental conditions: i) the moment of the host´s development; ii) the vigor or weakness of the host; and iii) the defense systems against infections and the formation of biofilm. The microbial community perceives the strength of the immune system through the concentration of hormones and remains contained in biofilms or disperses to other tissues when detecting a weak immune system, damaging the host. Changes in the concentration of hormones also cause changes in the rate of molecules of glucose and amino acids, which modify microbial growth, making it more difficult to control infection. Understanding the importance of hormones in determining susceptibility to infection is intricate and challenging. Therefore; this text shows an overview of the subject.
