Abstract
In 1977 Umberto Eco published one of his classics: Cómo se hace una tesis in the midst of profound changes in the Italian educational system, but also internationally. Basically, public universities were facing, in various parts of the world, the challenges of their massification: expansion of enrollment, creation of new careers and a closer link between research and teaching. His book was an immediate, and somewhat desperate, strategy to support the graduation of a diversity of students who did not have the experience, the means or the time to write a doctoral thesis.
