The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) defines diabetes mellitus, better known simply as “diabetes,” as a chronic condition that occurs when elevated blood glucose levels occur due to lack of insulin or the inability to respond to it. In this first part, its classification is detailed and the characteristics of types 1 and 2 are presented. Its diagnosis is described, and the main actors of the pathology are shown. Finally, the complications of the disease are addressed.
