Experience of Gerontological Nurses with Family Abuse of the Elderly

a vulnerable population frequently exposed to abuse. The World Health Organization defines elder abuse as acts or the omission of measures that cause harm or suffering, especially in relationships of trust.
Aim. To analyze the Experience of Gerontological Nurses with Family Abuse of the Elderly.
Methodology. Qualitative, phenomenological, hermeneutic study, in-depth semi-structured interviews were applied to 12 gerontogeriatric nursing specialists from Mexico City. The research met qualitative rigor criteria (credibility, transferability, confirmability, and dependability) and covered ethical aspects in research.
Results. The results reveal two categories: Identification of risk factors for elder abuse in older adults and experience of the gerontogeriatric nurse facing elder abuse. Significant barriers were also identified, such as poor awareness among health professionals and insufficient resources to intervene effectively. The findings highlight the importance of addressing both the health professionals and psychosocial aspects of neglect, highlighting the need for awareness and training.
Conclusion. This study provides evidence on the risk factors and barriers in care of elder abuse, highlighting the relevance of implementing integrated strategies that promote more effective and humanized care in the face of this public health problem.
