Resumen

El vermicompostaje es una técnica sencilla y económica en donde se utilizan distintas especies de anélidos, (lombrices) que junto con microorganismos convierten los desechos orgánicos en composta rica en nutrientes, contribuyendo así a la disminución de desechos orgánicos evitando los impactos negativos en el ambiente. Con el paso del tiempo y junto  con los avances científicos, esta tecnología se ha ido perfeccionado de tal manera que se ha logrado optimizar el proceso de transformación de la materia  mediante la oxidación biológica generada por las lombrices de tierra y los microorganismos del suelo. Existen técnicas estandarizadas para llevar a cabo la producción de vermicompost a escalas mayores, empleando métodos como pozos, hileras o tanques, además de distintos desechos orgánicos para un mayor aporte de nutrientes al suelo. Esta investigación se enfoca en las características requeridas para la elaboración del vermicompost, tomando en cuenta sustratos a utilizar (material orgánico), características fisicoquímicas, diferentes métodos de producción del vermicompost y sus aplicaciones hasta la actualidad.
