Proteínas DREB como interruptores genéticos frente al estrés ambiental en plantas

Resumen

Las plantas no pueden escapar cuando el ambiente se ha vuelto hostil. Frente a diversos tipos de estrés ambiental como la sequía, la salinidad o las bajas temperaturas, dependen de mecanismos moleculares precisos para adaptarse y sobrevivir. Entre ellos, destacan unas proteínas conocidas como factores de transcripción DREB (Dehydration-Responsive Element Binding, por sus siglas en inglés). Estas proteínas activan genes clave cuando la planta percibe condiciones de estrés. Su papel central en estas respuestas los convierte en candidatos atractivos para el desarrollo de cultivos más resistentes. Pero ¿cómo se organizan estos reguladores dentro del genoma? y ¿con qué otros genes interactúan?. Para responder a estas preguntas, el uso de bases de datos como NCBI y herramientas de análisis informático se vuelve imprescindible para describir la presencia y organización de los factores de transcripción DREB en 3 cultivos fundamentales en la agricultura y resistentes al estrés ambiental como el arroz (Oryza sativa), el jitomate (Solanum lycopersicum) y el maíz (Zea mays). El análisis permitió identificar factores DREB1F en las 3 especies de plantas analizadas y el factor transcripcional DREB1 en el jitomate, así como la presencia del dominio conservado AP2, esencial para la unión al ADN. Además, al examinar los contextos genómicos donde se localizan estos genes, se observaron asociaciones recurrentes con genes involucrados en la biosíntesis del azúcar protector llamado trehalosa, la señalización de ácido abscísico, la modificación de la pared celular y la regulación epigenética. Estas coincidencias sugieren que las proteínas DREB forman parte de redes genéticas coordinadas que fortalecen la capacidad de las plantas para enfrentar el estrés ambiental. En conjunto, este trabajo ofrece una mirada integradora a los mecanismos moleculares que permiten a las plantas resistir condiciones adversas y aportar información valiosa para futuras estrategias de mejora genética orientadas a la resiliencia agrícola.
