Corn tortillas and the Tlecalli stove, a strategy for life and its socioeconomic and environmental impact: Mrs. Angelina Torres Morán’s case

Abstract

Mexico is a country characterized by its cultural wealth since, currently, there is a habit of using the three-stone stove and firewood in its rural communities as a natural, economic resource and a support to cook their food and corn tortillas. Corn tortillas are a medium by which Mexican people are used to bringing their food to their mouths at least three times a day. The importance of making corn tortillas within families is customary in San Francisco Huilango, Tochimilco, Puebla. The purpose of this paper is to become familiar with the social and economic benefits through photographs, videos and personal interviews from an ethnographic and qualitative point of view to understand the life story of Mrs. Angelina Torres Morán, who has devoted her life to the sale of corn tortillas prepared on her three-stone stove on top of her ‘little table’. Nowadays, she still continues selling corn tortillas, but this time she cooks them on her Tlecalli firewood-saving stove. The benefits of using her Tlecalli stove are reflected on a better quality of life for the lady herself, her daughters, and her whole family.
