Abstract

Vermicomposting is a simple and economical technique where different species of annelids (earthworms) are used together with microorganisms to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, thus contributing to the reduction of organic waste and avoiding negative impacts on the environment. With the passage of time and along with scientific advances, this technology has been perfected in such a way that it has been possible to optimize the process of transformation of matter by means of biological oxidation generated by earthworms and soil microorganisms. There are standardized techniques to carry out the production of vermicompost on a larger scale, using methods such as pits, windrows or tanks, as well as different organic wastes for a greater contribution of nutrients to the soil. This research focuses on the characteristics required for the production of vermicompost, taking into account the substrates to be used (organic material), physicochemical characteristics, different methods of vermicompost production and its applications to date.
