Environmental pollution is one of the greatest threats for a sustainable economic and social development. The excessive consumption of petroleum-derived plastics and the large amount of waste generated by those has put different sectors of society on alert. So it is not surprising that scientists, engineers, archaeologists and even “influencers” are constantly sharing information about the design and applications of materials created from natural sources. Biodegradable bags, textiles free of toxic compounds, BIO containers and packaging, and other sustainable products have something in common; the use of biopolymers, which are potential candidates to improve the relationship between the consumption of basic products and the environment.
