The use of multilayer packaging is essential to safely handle and distribute processed foods thanks to the properties of its components that guarantee the protection and preservation of food. However, due to its short useful life, there is currently a contamination problem due to the waste generated after its use, causing significant environmental impacts from obtaining the raw materials for its manufacture to its inadequate disposal in landfills or incineration of waste. The objective of this article is to describe the current outlook of multilayer packaging waste management to contribute to the promotion of integrated management of this type of potentially recoverable waste and promote the transition from the linear economy to a circular economy.
