Abstract

Corneal damage is one of the main causes of blindness and it is caused by a lot of diseases. Its principal treatment is corneal transplantation. However, regenerative medicine provides new treatment alternatives with fewer complications to deal with the shortage of donor corneas, as well as the complications of conventional corneal transplants. Among the novel treatments one of them is the use of cells from the same patient to generate tissues that can be transplanted, in this way there is less immune rejection, as well as the injection of corneal endothelial cells is other treatment. In Mexico, the shortage of corneal donors is no exception, for this reason the developing company called Bifrost Biotech has a project to generate corneal substitutes.
