Abstract

Although some can be harmful to humans, causing diseases (pathogenic bacteria), there are also "good" bacteria that help humans; incredible as it may seem, there are many bacteria of this type. In this article, we will talk about an ecological technology based on a type of bacteria called electrogenic. The breathing process of these bacteria is used when they break down the organic matter contained in the wastewater produced by humans, and simultaneously, electrical energy is obtained. This eco-technology is called the Microbial Fuel Cell, and although it was studied for the first time in 1911, it still offers a wide field for the development of scientific research since the development of a technology that achieves the treatment of residual water and, with it, the obtainment of energy, is considered imperative on the path of development towards a society responsible with the environment.
