Resumen
El medio interestelar (ISM) se conoce como un entorno denso y frío donde se produce la formación de estrellas. En los últimos 70 años, los astrónomos han descubierto en el espacio un gran número de moléculas en fase gaseosa, entre las cuales las cadenas de carbono destacan debido a que desempeñan un papel muy importante en la química interestelar. El estudio de estas moléculas requiere de una amplia variedad de técnicas tanto para su detección astronómica como su caracterización en laboratorio. La química computacional a través de métodos ab initio o métodos basados en la DFT constituye una alternativa confiable y precisa para la caracterización de estas moléculas y para complementar e incluso dirigir las investigaciones experimentales.
