What is an Organism? A Dialogue between Uexküll, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty
Abstract
The reflexions that zoologist Jakob von Uexküll made around the notion of “organism” had a deep unquestionable impact in the biological conceptions of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Here, we offer a brief revision of the different ways in which these three thinkers answer to the question: What is an organism? At the same time, a common characteristic that these three authors identified as a criterion at the moment of answering said question is established. As well as how said criterion draws the foundations of a philosophical reflection about the role of the organism in the world.
